Turning a Cancelled Wedding into a Happy Occasion

A cancelled wedding day is a sad and painful thing but there are those former brides and grooms-to-be who take the initiative to make something positive out of their day…

Following the break-up of her relationship Jaymie Kennedy in Maidenhead, Kent turned her non-wedding into a black tie event to raise money for charity. On discovering that her grandfather had terminal cancer Jaymie decided to make use of the venue and wedding cake she had paid for and organise an event to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Her 110 wedding guests still attended but in black tie for a fundraising auction (including the wedding cake) and raised £2188, which is something to be proud of.

Phil Laboon, a former groom-to-be in Pittsburgh, USA had paid for his venue and food for his wedding guests before his relationship break-up at the last minute. He decided that rather than be consumed by sadness and dread the big day to turn it into a charity fundraiser raising thousands of dollars for a charity for sick children in developing countries. Turning a negative into a positive he came up with a clever name derived from the old adage of making lemonade when life deals you lemons and so ‘LemonAid’ was born. He sold tickets, which were in hot demand, gathered sponsorship and donated items with an aim of raising $50,000 for his chosen charity.

These people and others like them have had an inspiring strength of character and generosity to turn their sadness into somebody else’s gain raising thousands of pounds for deserving charities.
